About

About Open eBooks

Our mission is simple: to foster the love of reading. Open eBooks is a program that offers free ebooks to students attending eligible schools, working under the Department of Education’s Title 1 program.

Our goal is to provide a free and safe reading environment in which students can develop a relationship with reading on their own terms. Open eBooks offers free ebook titles to students to read on their school-provided or personal devices.

Open eBooks stands apart from other ebook apps because we are focused only on reading. We do not collect, store or sell any personal data about users, sell any books or support any sort of in-app purchase, and do not gain any profit.

About Supporting Partners

The New York Public Library created and maintains the app enabling children to read ebooks across devices.

As an initiative, Open eBooks is supported by a coalition of literacy, library, publishing and technology partners: founding nonprofit partners The New York Public Library, and First Book; educational technology company Clever; and content support provided by digital books distributor Baker & Taylor. This effort is made possible by generous commitments of publishers launched with funding provided in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

First Book is a nonprofit social enterprise that provides access to millions of brand new, high quality print books and other educational resources to classrooms and programs serving children in need. First Book is providing full access to Open eBooks to every educator in its Network, and will distribute access codes for Open eBooks to educators serving children.

Clever is a secure educational login platform currently used in almost half of all U.S. K-12 schools. Their support allows Title 1 schoolwide programs to access Open eBooks through the suite of Clever apps.
